Former DMK Functionary Arrested in Coimbatore for Defamatory Social Media Posts
In a significant development, the cybercrime police in Coimbatore have taken decisive action by arresting a former functionary of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party. The arrest, which occurred on Friday, stems from allegations of posting highly defamatory content on social media platforms targeting a fellow party colleague.
Details of the Arrest and Accused
The individual apprehended has been identified as Mohammed Rasheed, aged 38, residing in Kallamedu near Selvapuram. According to official police statements, Rasheed was taken into custody following a formal complaint lodged by Ibrahim, who serves as the DMK secretary for ward 79. The complaint detailed serious allegations of defamation through social media channels.
Background of the Dispute
Investigations reveal that Ibrahim and Rasheed were not only neighbours but also former friends. Their relationship, however, deteriorated significantly due to a personal dispute, leading to the termination of their friendship. This falling out reportedly fueled a deep-seated grudge held by Rasheed against Ibrahim.
In an act of retaliation, Rasheed allegedly resorted to social media to post photographs of Ibrahim accompanied by false and damaging claims. The posts accused Ibrahim of sexually harassing women at the ward office and exploiting several women by promising them jobs at ration shops. These allegations have been described by authorities as entirely baseless and intended to tarnish Ibrahim's reputation.
Legal Proceedings and Custody
Upon his arrest, Mohammed Rasheed was promptly produced before a local court. The court has since ordered his judicial custody, and he has been lodged in jail pending further legal proceedings. The cybercrime police are continuing their investigation to gather additional evidence and ensure a thorough examination of the case.
This incident highlights the growing concerns over the misuse of social media for personal vendettas and the swift response by law enforcement agencies in addressing such cybercrimes. The arrest serves as a stern warning against the dissemination of defamatory content online, emphasizing the legal consequences that can follow such actions.
