A 25-year-old woman died by suicide in Karnataka's Davanagere district on Wednesday, allegedly due to dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws. The victim, identified as Shwetha, was married to Mahesh for two years. She was found hanging at her residence. Her parents filed a complaint alleging that Mahesh and his family demanded additional dowry and subjected her to mental and physical torture. Police arrested Mahesh on Thursday under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Dowry Prohibition Act. This incident marks the third reported dowry-related death in Karnataka in recent weeks, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of anti-dowry laws.
Details of the Incident
According to police, Shwetha married Mahesh, a private employee, in 2022. Shortly after the wedding, Mahesh and his family began demanding a car and cash as additional dowry. They allegedly harassed Shwetha when her parents could not fulfill the demands. On the day of the incident, Shwetha's parents received a call from Mahesh informing them that she had died by suicide. A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as asphyxiation due to hanging.
Legal Action Taken
Based on the complaint filed by Shwetha's father, police registered a case under Section 304B (dowry death) and Section 498A (cruelty by husband or relatives) of the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Mahesh was arrested and produced before a local court, which remanded him to judicial custody. Police are also questioning other family members.
Rising Concern Over Dowry Deaths
This tragedy is part of a disturbing trend in Karnataka. Earlier this month, a 24-year-old woman died by suicide in Bengaluru after alleged dowry harassment, and another case was reported from Mysuru. Activists and women's rights groups have urged the government to implement stricter measures, including mandatory counseling for couples before marriage and faster legal proceedings. According to National Crime Records Bureau data, Karnataka reported over 100 dowry deaths in 2022, highlighting the persistent nature of the issue.
Community and Official Response
Local residents expressed shock and grief over the incident. Women's organizations held a small protest near the police station, demanding justice for Shwetha. District authorities have assured a thorough investigation. The state government has also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the victim's family under the Karnataka Victim Compensation Scheme.
Police have urged women facing dowry harassment to immediately report to the nearest women's helpline or police station. The National Commission for Women has also taken suo motu cognizance of the case.
