DRI Cracks Down on Smuggling Syndicate at Amritsar Airport

In a major enforcement operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully dismantled a smuggling network operating through the Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar. The action followed the recovery of high-end iPhones and a large quantity of counterfeit cigarettes, marking a significant blow to illicit trade activities in the region.

Intelligence-Led Interception Leads to Seizure

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a dedicated team from the DRI's Amritsar regional unit intercepted three passengers who had just arrived from Sharjah. Upon thorough examination of their baggage, officials uncovered a cache of 45 high-end iPhones alongside a substantial haul of counterfeit cigarettes. The total estimated value of the seized items is approximately Rs 90 lakh, highlighting the scale of the smuggling attempt.

Violations of Customs Regulations

The seized goods were immediately taken into custody under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Officials emphasized that the import of cigarettes is strictly prohibited under Indian law, classifying them as banned goods. Additionally, the commercial quantity of mobile phones discovered did not qualify as bona fide baggage, making them liable for confiscation under both the Customs Act and the prevailing Baggage Rules.

Key Points of the Operation:
  • Interception of three passengers arriving from Sharjah.
  • Recovery of 45 high-end iPhones and counterfeit cigarettes.
  • Total seizure value estimated at Rs 90 lakh.

Ongoing Investigation into Wider Network
