In a significant anti-narcotics operation, the Ludhiana Zonal Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized a massive consignment of 103 kilograms of ganja and arrested two individuals traveling in a car near the Inland Container Depot Gateway Rail Freight Limited (ICD GRFL) in Sahnewal.
Sophisticated Concealment Method Uncovered
The breakthrough came on Saturday following intensive surveillance based on specific intelligence about the vehicle transporting concealed contraband in violation of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. According to officials, the car was intercepted by DRI teams who had been monitoring its movements.
A thorough search revealed an elaborate concealment mechanism with 74 packets of ganja, each wrapped in distinctive khakhi-colored plastic tape. The narcotics were strategically hidden inside secret cavities constructed within the front and rear portions of the car's floor, demonstrating sophisticated engineering by the smugglers.
Market Value and Seizure Details
The seized ganja consignment carries an estimated value of approximately ₹31 lakh in the illicit market, marking one of the significant drug seizures in the region recently. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle used in the smuggling attempt has also been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
DRI officers described how the smugglers had created false flooring within the vehicle, with compartments carefully integrated into the car's original structure. The design was so meticulously executed that it blended seamlessly with the factory-built elements, making detection exceptionally challenging for routine checks.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Both individuals traveling in the vehicle have been taken into custody and are facing charges under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. The DRI has initiated a comprehensive investigation to uncover the entire supply chain, including the source and intended destination of the narcotics consignment.
This operation near the ICD GRFL in Sahnewal underscores the continued vigilance of revenue intelligence agencies against drug trafficking networks operating in the region. The successful interception prevented a substantial quantity of narcotics from reaching consumers and represents a significant blow to organized smuggling operations using innovative concealment methods.
Authorities have emphasized that such sophisticated concealment techniques are becoming increasingly common among drug trafficking networks, necessitating enhanced surveillance and detection capabilities. The DRI has urged public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities to combat the menace of drug trafficking effectively.
