Maharashtra Power Plants on High Alert Following Anonymous Drone Bomb Threat Email

Security operations were intensified across multiple thermal power plants in Maharashtra on Tuesday after an anonymous email warning of drone-mounted bombs containing cyanide and nerve gas sparked alarm among authorities. The threatening message specifically named key facilities including Koradi, Khaparkheda, Akola, and Bhusawal thermal power stations.

Detailed Threat and Immediate Response

The email, sent from the address neeraaja_gandhi@outlook.com, claimed that 16 bombs filled with cyanide and nerve gas had been planted using drones at the power stations. The message stated in Hindi: "Power station mein drone ki madad se cyanide/nerve gas se bhare 16 bomb lagaye gaye hain. Sabhi karmchariyon ko wahan se nikal lo!" which translates to "16 bombs filled with cyanide/nerve gas have been planted at the power station with the help of drones. All employees should evacuate from there!"

The threat email claimed the bombs would detonate after afternoon prayers as a protest against alleged atrocities against women in Tamil Nadu. The message also contained a lengthy political rant with various allegations and made vague references to similar past threats targeting the Vidhan Bhavan and Reserve Bank of India in Mumbai.

Massive Security Deployment

Upon receiving alerts, Nagpur police and district administration responded swiftly with a comprehensive security operation:

  • Armed personnel were deployed at all threatened facilities
  • Bomb disposal squads and quick-response teams were stationed at the plants
  • Drone surveillance units were activated to monitor the premises
  • All entry points underwent intensified security checks
  • Access was restricted to essential staff only following strict screening procedures

According to sources, Koradi thermal power station received the threatening email around 10:30 AM, while Khaparkheda plant officials received it later in the evening.

Investigation and Preliminary Findings

Cyber police have initiated tracing operations to determine the origin of the threatening email. Preliminary investigations suggest possible links to southern India, and authorities are coordinating with other states as part of the technical investigation.

A senior official commented on the situation: "We are on alert though the email seemed to be a hoax intended to create panic. No explosive devices or drones have been found during initial sweeps of the facilities."

A case has been registered under relevant laws, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities have emphasized that no terror links have been established so far, with senior officers describing the email as possible mischief aimed at creating fear and disruption.

Critical Infrastructure Protection

The threatened power plants represent crucial infrastructure for Maharashtra's energy grid. Koradi and Khaparkheda thermal power stations specifically supply electricity to Maharashtra's industrial belt, and any disruption could potentially affect power supply across the Vidarbha region.

Despite the heightened security alert, officials confirmed that all power plants remain fully operational under increased vigilance. Security protocols have been enhanced, and monitoring continues around the clock as authorities work to verify the credibility of the threat while maintaining essential power generation operations.

The incident highlights growing concerns about drone-based security threats to critical infrastructure and the need for robust response mechanisms to address such anonymous threats while minimizing disruption to essential services.
