Hyderabad College Drug Scandal Exposed After Fatal Road Accident
In a shocking revelation, a fatal road accident in February has led Telangana's EAGLE force to uncover a significant case of drug abuse on the campus of a premier educational institute in Hyderabad. At least 20 students from this institution are now under police scrutiny for alleged violations of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Accident Triggers Investigation
The incident occurred in Shamirpet when five students from the institute were returning from a food court on two different motorcycles. According to an EAGLE official, one bike carrying three boys collided with a transport vehicle, resulting in one fatality while the other two escaped unharmed. "Recently, we discovered that all five students were under the influence of drugs, and the deceased was in possession of ganja, which went missing after the accident," the official stated.
Police Probe and Student Involvement
Following a tip-off from a college insider, police initially took two students present at the accident scene into custody and conducted drug tests. "One tested positive for ganja, and the other negative. After counselling, it was revealed that students purchased ganja from another student within the same college," explained an EAGLE official. Based on this information, authorities launched a discreet investigation to avoid panic on campus, uncovering that several students were abusing ganja in and around the institute premises.
Police subsequently summoned three more students, all of whom tested negative. However, at least 14 others, including one from Bangladesh and one from Nepal, whose names emerged during the probe, remain at large. "We are actively trying to track them down," added an investigator.
Lack of Cooperation from Anti-Drug Committees
Officials have expressed frustration over the lack of cooperation from anti-drug committees (ADCs) in colleges, including private and central universities. "They often withhold information about drug abuse due to fears of damaging the institute's reputation. We have repeatedly emphasized that our goal is to apprehend drug suppliers and help rehabilitate abusers, enabling them to lead better lives," said an EAGLE official. "Colleges must realize that by withholding information, they are endangering students' lives."
Police have also written to the college management, informing them about the drug menace and seeking cooperation in rehabilitating affected students.
Probe into Previous Student Death
In addition to the current case, authorities are investigating the death of a student on the same campus in October 2025. While the management claimed the student died from choking on food, with no police complaint filed, cops now suspect it could be linked to drug abuse. "We are probing to determine the real cause of death," an official noted.
This unfolding scandal highlights critical issues of campus safety and the urgent need for collaborative efforts between educational institutions and law enforcement to combat drug abuse among students.
