A luxury BMW car, driven at high speed by an allegedly intoxicated man, caused a dramatic accident on a busy Ludhiana flyover on Monday. The driver, a resident of Delhi, crashed into another vehicle and a road divider before turning aggressive towards people who came to help and media personnel who arrived at the scene.
Chaotic Scene on Ferozepur Road Flyover
The incident unfolded in the afternoon on the elevated section of Ferozepur Road near Bhai Bala Chowk. The BMW, bearing a registration plate from Uttar Pradesh, was coming from the direction of Mullanpur when it lost control. The high-speed collision occurred amid heavy traffic, sending shockwaves through the area. The impact was severe, causing heavy damage to the luxury car, but the driver miraculously escaped injury as the vehicle's airbags deployed promptly. No other injuries were reported from the crash site.
Driver's Aggressive Outburst and Police Action
Following the crash, passersby rushed to the spot to assist the driver. However, instead of cooperating, the man reportedly turned hostile and began hurling abuse at the bystanders. The situation escalated when media persons reached the location to cover the incident. As seen in videos circulating on social media, the driver allegedly tried to snatch a camera from a journalist and made insulting remarks about the journalist's turban.
Police from the Ghumar Mandi post responded swiftly to the chaos. Assistant Sub-Inspector Subhash Kumar, the investigating officer, stated that the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The officers took the suspect into custody and subsequently moved him to the local civil hospital for a mandatory medical examination to confirm alcohol consumption. His family has been informed about the incident.
Ongoing Investigation and Broader Concerns
The Delhi-based suspect remains in police custody as authorities wait for the medical report. A formal investigation has been initiated under relevant sections of traffic and public nuisance laws. ASI Subhash Kumar confirmed the suspect's Delhi address as part of the procedural details.
This incident has once again highlighted the menace of reckless and drunk driving on Ludhiana's infrastructure. Ludhiana flyovers have witnessed multiple high-speed crashes this year, leading to renewed calls from citizens and authorities for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and heightened penalties for violations to ensure public safety.
