Drunk man assaults Surat traffic cop on duty

A young traffic police constable in Surat became the victim of a violent assault by an inebriated individual while performing his official duties on Monday night. The incident has sparked outrage and highlights the risks faced by law enforcement personnel on the ground.

Violent Confrontation at Accident Site

The attack took place in the Pal area of Surat. Jaydipsinh Rathod, a 23-year-old constable attached to Region 4 of the Surat traffic police department, had arrived at the scene of an accident near the Rio Empire building. His purpose was to manage the situation and ensure public order.

However, the scene turned chaotic when 38-year-old Gurmedar Singh Saini, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, began verbally abusing the officer. Witnesses reported that Saini hurled abuses at Constable Rathod in front of the crowd that had gathered at the accident site.

Assault on a Public Servant

When Constable Jaydipsinh Rathod instructed Saini to stop the abuse and allow him to carry out his duty, the situation escalated physically. Ignoring the constable's warnings, Saini allegedly launched a direct attack.

The drunk man punched Rathod multiple times, targeting his head and body. The assault caused injuries to the constable, who was simply trying to do his job. The brazen act of violence against a uniformed officer performing his duty shocked onlookers.

Legal Action and Multiple Charges

Following the assault, the Pal police were immediately alerted and intervened at the site. A formal complaint was registered against Gurmedar Singh Saini based on the constable's account and witness statements.

The police have booked Saini under serious sections of the law. The primary charges include obstructing a public servant from discharging his duties and causing grievous hurt to a public servant who was on duty. Given his alleged state, the police have also invoked prohibition laws against him for consuming alcohol.

This case underscores the legal consequences of assaulting officials and the commitment of the police to protect their own. The incident serves as a stern reminder that such acts of violence against those in uniform will be met with strict legal action.
