The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday conducted searches at the residence of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram in connection with a money laundering case related to the Kerala Municipal Road Lines (CMRL). The ED team, accompanied by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, reached Vijayan's residence early in the morning and carried out the搜查 operation.
Details of the Raid
The searches are part of an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the CMRL project, which was implemented during Vijayan's tenure as the state's power minister. The ED suspects that funds were laundered through shell companies and used for illegal activities. Officials said that documents and electronic devices have been seized for further examination.
Political Reactions
The raid triggered a strong reaction from the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], which termed it a political vendetta by the central government. CPI(M) state secretary M. V. Govindan said that the ED's action was aimed at intimidating the opposition and diverting attention from the central government's failures. Meanwhile, the opposition Congress party welcomed the investigation, calling it a step towards transparency.
Background of the Case
The CMRL case involves allegations of corruption in the awarding of contracts for road construction and maintenance. The ED had earlier registered a money laundering case based on a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Kerala Police's Crime Branch. The investigation has so far led to the arrest of several individuals, including former officials of the CMRL.
Legal Proceedings
Vijayan has not been named as an accused in the case so far. However, the ED is examining his role in the decision-making process related to the project. Vijayan's legal team has stated that they will cooperate with the investigation and maintain that he is innocent.
The ED's action is part of a broader crackdown on alleged financial crimes in the state. The agency has also conducted raids at multiple other locations linked to the case. Further developments are expected as the investigation progresses.
