The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a summons to Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the ongoing investigation into the West Bengal teacher recruitment scam. The central agency has asked Banerjee to appear before it on June 20 for questioning.
Background of the Case
The teacher recruitment scam involves irregularities in the hiring process of primary and secondary school teachers in West Bengal. The ED is probing the money laundering angle in the case, which has already seen several arrests, including that of former West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee.
Summons Details
According to sources, the ED has summoned Banerjee as part of its investigation into the alleged financial irregularities. Banerjee, who is the nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has been asked to provide details regarding his role in the recruitment process.
The TMC leader has previously denied any wrongdoing and has accused the central government of targeting opposition leaders. The ED's move is seen as a significant development in the case, which has political ramifications in the state.
Political Reactions
The TMC has criticized the summons, calling it a politically motivated move by the BJP-led central government. Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "This is a clear attempt to harass our leaders. Abhishek Banerjee has nothing to do with the scam, and we will fight this legally."
On the other hand, the BJP has welcomed the ED's action, stating that it shows the law is taking its course. State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said, "No one is above the law. The truth will come out."
Previous Developments
The ED had earlier arrested several individuals, including middlemen and officials, in connection with the scam. The agency has also conducted raids at multiple locations across the state, seizing documents and digital evidence.
The teacher recruitment scam came to light after a series of allegations about irregularities in the appointment of teachers. The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) was at the center of the controversy, with accusations of illegal appointments and financial fraud.
What Lies Ahead
Banerjee's appearance before the ED is expected to be a crucial step in the investigation. The agency may confront him with evidence gathered so far and seek his version of events. Legal experts say that if Banerjee fails to cooperate, the ED could take further action, including issuing a fresh summons or even arresting him.
The case has become a major political flashpoint in West Bengal, with the TMC accusing the BJP of using central agencies to destabilize the state government. The ED, however, maintains that its investigation is impartial and based on evidence.
