Varanasi: In a tragic incident, an elderly couple was found dead inside their house in Gomadih village under Gambhirpur police station in Azamgarh district on Saturday, three days after they divided their property among family members. Their daughter has alleged that they were poisoned to death by relatives.
Victims Identified
The deceased have been identified as Shyamlal (80) and his wife Basanta Devi (70). The couple had been living in their home with their family.
Police Investigation Underway
After assessing the scene, Azamgarh CO (Lalganj) Bhupesh Pandey stated that prima facie, the deaths appeared to be caused by consumption of a toxic substance. Police and forensic teams collected evidence before the bodies were sent for postmortem examination. Further investigation is in progress, he added.
Sequence of Events
The incident came to light on Saturday morning when the couple was found lying dead inside their room. During preliminary investigation, police learned that Shyamlal had four sons and a daughter, all married. His daughter alleged that three days ago, the couple called all family members and divided their land and property.
A dispute erupted the following day between the elderly pair and their eldest son and daughter-in-law over issues related to the division. On Friday night, both had dinner and went to sleep in their room. On Saturday morning, the younger daughter-in-law went to wake them and found both lying dead on the bed.
Daughter's Allegation
The daughter alleged that her eldest sister-in-law administered poison to the couple. Police are investigating the claim and have recorded statements from family members.
The case has sent shockwaves through the village, highlighting the tragic consequences of property disputes within families. Authorities are awaiting the postmortem report to determine the exact cause of death.
