CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: An 84-year-old man was allegedly hacked to death by his son in the Silk Mill Colony area of the city on Thursday, shortly after a court-ordered handover of physical possession of a property to the elderly man, according to police. The suspect was arrested later that evening.
Incident Details
Crime branch inspector Gajanan Kalyankar stated, "Preliminary probe suggests Abdul Rahman Patel, a pharmacist, attacked his father, Jafar Kamruddin Patel, with a sharp-edged weapon after losing possession of the property following a court order." Jafar Patel's daughter, who attempted to intervene, sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.
Legal Process
Inspector Krishna Shinde of the Satara police station confirmed that the handover was conducted lawfully. "The court had directed that the property be given to Jafar Patel. Officials from the SDM office, along with police personnel, completed the process and handed over possession," he explained.
Sequence of Events
After the formalities, officials and police personnel exited the house. Moments later, Jafar Patel re-entered the premises to ensure it was secured. At that point, Abdul Patel allegedly struck him with a sharp-edged weapon. When Abdul's sister rushed in to save her father, she too was assaulted. Hearing the commotion, police personnel hurried back, but the accused had fled by then.
Both victims were taken to a local hospital, where doctors declared Jafar Patel dead during treatment. His daughter remains under medical care. A senior officer confirmed Abdul Patel has since been arrested. Police commissioner Pravin Pawar visited both the hospital and the crime scene as investigators began piecing together the sequence of events.
