BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday said that if his party comes to power in West Bengal, it will bring the Tata Group back to the state. He attacked the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) over its industrial policy, accusing it of failing to attract investment.
Adhikari's Promise
Speaking to reporters, Adhikari stated that the BJP government would not 'indulge in lies and organise photo sessions like the previous government did to attract industries'. He emphasised that his administration would take concrete steps to revive Bengal's industrial landscape.
Criticism of TMC
Adhikari criticised the TMC government's approach to industrial development, alleging that it prioritised optics over actual progress. He claimed that many businesses had left the state due to the hostile environment created by the Mamata Banerjee-led government.
The BJP leader's remarks come amid ongoing political sparring between the two parties ahead of the next assembly elections. Adhikari, a former TMC strongman who switched to the BJP in 2020, has been vocal about his vision for Bengal's economic revival.
Tata Group's History in Bengal
The Tata Group, one of India's largest conglomerates, had a significant presence in West Bengal, including the iconic Tata Motors plant in Singur. However, the project was scrapped in 2008 following massive protests led by the then-opposition TMC, forcing Tata to move the Nano car project to Gujarat.
Adhikari's promise to bring Tata back is seen as an attempt to woo voters by highlighting the BJP's pro-business stance. Political analysts believe that industrial revival could be a key issue in the upcoming elections.
