PRAYAGRAJ: In a significant operation, a joint team comprising officers from the West Bengal Police and the Handia police station in Prayagraj successfully apprehended former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Khokan Das on Sunday. The arrest took place near the Handia toll plaza situated along the Kanpur–Varanasi highway.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Ganga Nagar) Kuldeep Singh confirmed the arrest of the former TMC legislator near the Handia toll plaza. According to Singh, Das was traveling from Meerut when the joint team intercepted him. He stated, "A team of West Bengal Police sought assistance from its Handia (Prayagraj) counterpart, following which the joint team was carrying out vehicle checks on the highway."

Das, who previously represented the Bardhaman South constituency in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, was taken into custody in connection with serious charges, including threats, extortion, and abetment of political violence. The police will take him to West Bengal after obtaining transit remand from the concerned court.

Police Operation and Background

Police sources revealed that a team of West Bengal Police had been tracking the former MLA for some time and received specific inputs about his movement on National Highway 2 (NH-2). The former TMC leader was detained following information regarding the pending case against him. He is being produced before a local court to secure transit remand, which will facilitate his transfer to West Bengal for further interrogation and legal proceedings.
