A shocking incident of violence against a child has come to light in south Bengaluru, where a 35-year-old former gym trainer allegedly assaulted a five-year-old boy. The attack occurred on December 14 on Old Post Office Road in Thyagarajanagar.

The young victim was playing badminton with other children when the accused, identified as Ranjan M, also known as Ranjith, reportedly kicked him. The boy, who was visiting his maternal uncle's house in Doddamavalli near Lalbagh with his mother, sustained an injury above his eyebrow along with scratches on his hands and feet. The assault took place around 1:15 PM.
Following the attack, the boy's relatives rushed him to a hospital for treatment. His mother filed a formal police complaint the same day, demanding strict action against Ranjan. Initially registered as a non-cognisable offence, the case was later converted into a First Information Report (FIR).
Police Investigation and Accused's Background
The FIR was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 115(2) for voluntarily causing hurt. CCTV footage from the area confirmed the assault was intentional, as stated by the boy's mother. She further alleged that Ranjan had a history of targeting children, including attempting to hit a girl with his bike, pulling a boy's hair, and elbowing another girl the following day.
During interrogation, a senior police officer revealed that Ranjan, who is unmarried, confessed to the assault. Ranjan claimed he felt "very distracted" by the noise of children shouting while playing and upon seeing them on the road. The officer stated that Ranjan appears to be mentally unstable and is undergoing psychiatric treatment. He has no prior criminal record but tends to stay isolated.
Ranjan was arrested and later released on station bail. His parents have since taken him to Madurai for further treatment. Police are collecting details about his medical history and have gathered CCTV evidence of other alleged incidents.
