Extortion Accused Injured in Dramatic Police Encounter in Hisar District
In a dramatic turn of events in Haryana's Hisar district, a man accused of demanding a massive Rs 50 lakh extortion payment was injured during a police encounter late Friday night. The incident occurred in Hansi after the suspect, identified as Anurag, allegedly overpowered a constable, snatched his firearm, and opened fire on a police team, according to official statements.
Violent Confrontation During Weapon Recovery Operation
Police officials detailed that Anurag had been apprehended by a Special Task Force team earlier on Friday evening. He was being transported to a location near the Sundar Canal bridge for what authorities described as a weapon recovery operation when the violent confrontation unfolded.
Around 11 pm, as Anurag exited the police vehicle, he reportedly overpowered a constable, seized his service weapon, and began firing at the assembled police team. In response to the immediate threat, officers returned fire, resulting in Anurag sustaining a bullet injury to his leg during the exchange.
Medical Treatment and Investigation Details
The injured suspect received initial medical attention at the Civil Hospital in Hansi before being transferred to the Civil Hospital in Hisar for more comprehensive treatment. Police confirmed his condition is being monitored as investigations into both the extortion attempt and subsequent encounter continue.
Earlier Arrest Following Extortion Demand
This violent episode followed Anurag's arrest earlier on Friday, just two hours after he and an accomplice allegedly attempted to extort money from a local business. According to police reports, CCTV footage captured the two suspects arriving on a motorcycle at Chotu Misthan Bhandar, a well-established sweet shop operating for nearly forty years opposite the vegetable market in Hansi.
The footage reportedly shows one suspect entering the shop around 3:30 pm and handing an employee a handwritten note addressed to "Lala," the shop owner. The threatening message demanded Rs 50 lakh be paid within twenty-four hours, with severe consequences promised for non-compliance.
Swift Police Response and Suspect Identification
Shop owner Hanni immediately alerted authorities upon discovering the extortion note. Deputy Superintendent of Police Vinod Shankar and City Station House Officer Sukhjeet Singh promptly arrived at the scene with a specialized team and initiated a comprehensive search operation.
DSP Shankar revealed that the extortion note specifically mentioned two names: "Basu alias Anurag" and "Himanshu." This crucial information enabled investigators to quickly trace and apprehend both suspects. Additional video evidence surfaced showing the suspects arriving on their motorcycle and fleeing the scene after discarding the threatening note.
Background of the Accused
Police identified Anurag as a resident of Vikas Nagar in Hansi who reportedly worked at a local eatery. The investigation into his alleged accomplice Himanshu continues as authorities work to determine the full scope of their criminal activities and potential connections to other incidents.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
The case has drawn significant attention in the Hisar region, highlighting both the brazen nature of the extortion attempt and the dangerous circumstances police officers routinely face during operations. Legal proceedings are expected to move forward once Anurag receives sufficient medical treatment and investigators complete their examination of all available evidence, including the recovered firearm and ballistic analysis from the encounter site.
