In a shocking case of betrayal, the Gorakhpur Police have successfully cracked a brutal double murder that took place in the Ghosipurwa area, arresting the prime accused who was a trusted family friend of the victims. The gruesome crime, which resulted in the deaths of two women, was solved after an intense 11-day investigation.
The Crime of Trust Betrayed
According to police officials, the accused, identified as Rajat, son of railway employee Ramadhar, was known to the victims' family and even addressed one of the victims, Vimla, as his aunt. Exploiting this deep-seated trust, Rajat allegedly executed a pre-planned robbery that turned fatal. He is accused of murdering Vimla and her elderly mother, Shanti Devi, on the night of November 24.
The police reconstruction of the crime reveals a chilling sequence of events. Investigators stated that Rajat offered liquor to the two women. Once they were inebriated, he allegedly attacked them with a hammer, killing them on the spot. He then fled the scene with approximately Rs 4.5 lakh in cash and a gold bracelet.
The Motive and the Clues That Led to Arrest
The motive behind the heinous act was purely financial. Police investigations revealed that Rajat was burdened by loans, online app EMIs, and heavy spending on his girlfriend. The stolen money was quickly splurged. He reportedly bought a mobile phone worth Rs 1.5 lakh for his girlfriend, gave Rs 2 lakh to his father, and handed over another Rs 50,000 while falsely claiming it was from a property deal.
This sudden and unexplained spending spree raised red flags and eventually became a crucial lead for the police. The investigation was particularly challenging as the murderer had wrapped the hammer in cloth, leaving no fingerprints, and there were no signs of forced entry at the crime scene, suggesting the victims knew their attacker.
Meticulous Police Work Cracks the Case
Facing a complex case with few immediate clues, the Gorakhpur Police launched a massive manhunt. The investigative team scanned footage from 800 CCTV cameras, analysed data from 200 mobile numbers, and questioned several locals. The digital trail, including Rajat's phone location and his post-crime spending pattern, gradually pointed towards his involvement.
SP City Abhinav Tyagi explained that the accused was intimately familiar with the family's daily routine and their financial situation, which helped him plan the double murder meticulously. During sustained interrogation, Rajat finally confessed to the crime. Following his confession, the police recovered melted gold, remaining cash, the murder weapon (hammer), and his motorcycle used in the crime.
The arrest has brought a sense of closure to a community rattled by the brutality of the crime committed by someone considered part of the family's inner circle.
