Farmer Brutally Attacked Over Family Dispute in Cuddalore District

In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the local community, a 64-year-old farmer was doused in petrol and set on fire at a village near Panruti in Cuddalore district on Thursday night. The police have confirmed that the attack was carried out by his daughter-in-law's lover, who was angered by the victim's objections to their affair.

Details of the Violent Assault

The victim, identified as Rajendiran from Maligampattu village under Kadampuliyur police limits, suffered severe injuries with approximately 70% burns on his neck, back, and lower hip. According to police reports, Rajendiran was riding pillion with his friend Kandan when three men in a van intercepted them. Two assailants exited the vehicle, poured petrol on Rajendiran, and set him ablaze after chasing Kandan away, before fleeing the scene.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Authorities swiftly reviewed CCTV camera footage from the area, which led them to identify the prime suspect as D Manikandan, a 39-year-old resident of Panruti. The investigation revealed that Manikandan was in a relationship with Rajendiran's daughter-in-law, B Jayapriya, aged 28, whose husband had passed away three years ago. Rajendiran had strongly objected to this affair, which reportedly infuriated Manikandan and motivated the brutal attack.

In a coordinated effort, the police arrested Manikandan along with his accomplices: G Gubendiran, aged 29, who aided in the crime; M Parthiban, aged 28, the van driver; and Jayapriya herself. All four individuals were produced before a local magistrate, who remanded them in judicial custody, pending further legal proceedings.

Medical Response and Community Impact

Following the attack, passersby rushed the critically injured farmer to Panruti Government Hospital for immediate medical attention. Due to the severity of his burns, he was subsequently referred to Cuddalore Government General Hospital for specialized treatment. This incident has highlighted concerns over domestic violence and family disputes in rural areas, prompting calls for increased vigilance and support systems.

The case underscores the tragic consequences of unresolved personal conflicts and the importance of community safety measures in preventing such heinous acts.
