A tragic road accident in Belthangady taluk resulted in the death of a pickup driver and injuries to another person on Wednesday. The incident occurred when a pickup vehicle lost control and overturned into a 10ft deep roadside gorge, leading to severe consequences for those involved.

Details of the Accident

According to a complaint filed by Ramappa Nayak, the accident took place on the Kanaraje–Kacheri public road. His nephew, Hemachandra, was driving the pickup from Naitadka towards Kacheri, with Umarabba as a passenger in the vehicle. When the vehicle reached Kanaraje in Tekkarru village, the driver allegedly engaged in rash and negligent driving behavior.

On a sloping stretch of the road, Hemachandra lost control of the pickup, causing it to overturn and fall into a 10ft deep gorge. The impact of the crash resulted in injuries to both the driver and Umarabba, who were immediately shifted to Puttur Government Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Fatal Outcome and Police Action

Upon examination at the hospital, doctors declared driver Hemachandra dead due to the severe injuries sustained in the accident. Umarabba survived but remains injured and under medical care. In response to this tragic event, a case has been registered at the Puttur Traffic Police Station.

The police have invoked multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the driver, including:

  • Section 281: Rash driving or riding on a public way.
  • Section 106: Causing death by a negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide.
  • Section 125(a): Act endangering life or personal safety of others.

This incident highlights the dangers of reckless driving on public roads, especially in areas with challenging terrain like gorges. Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances to prevent similar accidents in the future.
