Ferozepur Anti-Narcotics Task Force Busts Major Cross-Border Drug Smuggling Operation
In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Ferozepur range anti-narcotics task force (ANTF) has successfully apprehended two key smugglers and seized a substantial cache of contraband, weapons, and illicit funds. This operation marks a critical blow to cross-border drug networks operating in the region.
Arrests and Seizures: A Detailed Breakdown
The arrested individuals have been identified as Gurwinder Singh, alias Gori, and Sikander Singh, alias Kali, both residents of Ferozepur district. Their capture followed intensive technical surveillance and credible human intelligence, which led authorities to their activities.
On March 16, the ANTF conducted a raid that resulted in the recovery of 5.71 kilograms of heroin, Rs 16.9 lakh in drug money, and two .30 bore pistols accompanied by two magazines and 10 live cartridges. In a subsequent investigation on Tuesday, police uncovered additional weaponry, including one 9 mm Taurus pistol with 10 live cartridges and one .32 bore pistol.
Cross-Border Links and Drone-Based Smuggling
Investigations have revealed that the accused were allegedly in direct contact with Pakistani smugglers. They had recently received a consignment of contraband via a drone drop from across the border near their native village, Nihala Kilcha. This method highlights the evolving tactics used by traffickers to bypass traditional security measures.
The recovery of sophisticated firearms and ammunition suggests that the smugglers were heavily armed, potentially indicating links to broader criminal networks involved in violence and intimidation.
Implications and Ongoing Efforts
This bust underscores the persistent threat of cross-border drug smuggling in Punjab and the proactive measures being taken by law enforcement. The ANTF's use of advanced surveillance techniques demonstrates a commitment to disrupting supply chains and curbing the flow of narcotics into India.
Authorities are continuing their probe to uncover further connections and dismantle the entire network. This operation serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in combating organized crime and the importance of international cooperation in such efforts.
