Shanthi, who is engaged in the business of purchasing and selling red sanders, had sought a timber licence from the forest officer, Saravanan. According to police reports, Saravanan initially demanded a bribe of Rs 1 lakh for processing the licence application.
Unwilling to comply with this illegal demand, Shanthi decided to take action against the corruption. She lodged a formal complaint with the DVAC officials in Tiruvallur, detailing the extortion attempt. This proactive step set the stage for a carefully planned trap operation to catch the officer in the act.
Trap Operation and Arrest
Acting swiftly on the complaint, DVAC officials instructed Shanthi to cooperate in a sting operation. She was directed to hand over Rs 50,000 as part of the planned trap. On Monday, the operation unfolded at the forest office, where Shanthi met Saravanan to deliver the money.
A team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Jayakumar was positioned to monitor the transaction. As soon as Saravanan accepted the bribe, the DVAC team moved in and caught him red-handed. The officer was immediately taken into custody and transported to the DVAC office in Tiruvallur for further interrogation and investigation.
