The CMBT police in Chennai have arrested four individuals, including a history-sheeter with 58 robbery and chain-snatching cases, for assaulting and robbing a software engineer of his laptop and mobile phones near Arumbakkam. The incident occurred on the night of May 5, 2025.
Details of the Accused
The police identified the accused as Vignesh alias 'Pallu' Vicky, 30, from Mangadu, along with college students Thirupathi, Gautham, and Sanjay Kumar. Vignesh is a notorious criminal with a long record of robberies and chain snatchings.
Victim's Ordeal
The victim, Shyam Dhan Ghoshal, 30, a native of West Bengal, was residing in a hostel in Vadapalani and worked at a software firm in Pudupet. On May 5, after finishing work, he visited a hotel in Egmore and consumed alcohol. Later that night, he booked a bike taxi to return to his hostel. According to police, Shyam got off the motorcycle near the 100-Feet Road in Arumbakkam and began walking towards his hostel in an intoxicated state.
At that time, four men traveling on two motorcycles intercepted him. They robbed him at knifepoint and knocked him unconscious. After regaining consciousness, Shyam realized his belongings had been stolen and filed a complaint with the CMBT police.
Investigation and Arrests
Police examined CCTV camera footage from the area and identified the suspects. A special police team tracked them down and arrested them. The accused were remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation is underway to determine if they are involved in other similar crimes.
The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. They also advised against walking alone late at night, especially in isolated areas.
