LUCKNOW: A tragic road accident on the Bahraich-Nanpara road in the early hours of Monday claimed the lives of four individuals and left two others critically injured. The incident took place near the Digwa petrol pump, falling under the Matera police station jurisdiction, approximately 30 kilometers from the district headquarters.
Details of the Collision
According to police reports, the combine harvester was initially stationed along the roadside. It suddenly began turning onto the road when a car traveling from the opposite direction crashed head-on into it. The force of the impact was immense, throwing the car about six feet away and causing it to overturn into roadside bushes. The front of the vehicle was completely mangled, its roof was torn off, and the seven-foot-long car was crushed to roughly four feet in length. The driver sustained a severe jaw injury.
Victims and Rescue Operation
The six occupants of the Tata Punch car were friends from Bahraich, traveling from Nanpara towards Bahraich. The accident occurred at around 12:40 am. Local residents rushed to the scene upon hearing the loud crash, while the combine driver abandoned the vehicle and fled. A rescue operation lasting nearly half an hour was conducted by police teams led by Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Srivastava, SP Rural Durga Prasad Tiwari, and Matera SHO Harikesh Singh. Officers struggled to extract the trapped occupants from the wreckage, which was filled with blood.
Four individuals died on the spot: Ashwani Srivastava, Altaf Ahmad, Anil Kumar, and Mahendra. The injured, identified as Vikas Srivastava and Shivam Srivastava, were initially taken to Nanpara Community Health Centre before being referred to the district hospital due to their critical condition.
Police Investigation
Police personnel themselves shifted the bodies to the mortuary and ensured the injured were rushed to the hospital. SP Vishwajeet Srivastava stated that preliminary investigation suggests the collision with the combine harvester caused the accident. Further investigation is underway, and legal action will be taken accordingly. SHO Harikesh Singh confirmed that efforts are ongoing to trace the absconding combine driver and that necessary legal proceedings have been initiated.
