An alleged gangster sustained a gunshot wound to his left shin during a police encounter near Nakhan Wala Bagh in Jalandhar on Tuesday. The accused, identified as Sham Das, was overpowered by the police team and subsequently admitted to the Civil Hospital for treatment.
Background of the Accused
Sham Das, a native of Bihar who had been residing in Mohalla Guru Diwan Nagar, Garha, was initially arrested on July 4 in connection with the possession of 1 kg of cannabis (ganja). An FIR under Section 20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against him at Division No. 7 police station.
Disclosure of Previous Offence
During interrogation, Sham Das reportedly disclosed his involvement in a firing incident that occurred in Garha on November 11 last year following a quarrel. The police confirmed that an FIR had already been registered in that case under Sections 109 and 34 of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) and Sections 25, 27, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act at the same police station.
Police Remand and Weapon Recovery Attempt
Sham Das was arrested in the firing case, and the court granted a two-day police remand. To recover the weapon used in the earlier incident, Inspector Ravinder Kumar, SHO, along with the police team, took the accused to the area near Nakhan Wala Bagh, where he had reportedly concealed the firearm.
The Encounter
According to the police, while leading the team to the hidden weapon, Sham Das allegedly attempted to mislead them and suddenly opened fire on the police party using the recovered firearm. In response, ASI Satinder Kumar fired from his service pistol in self-defence, injuring the accused in the left shin. Senior officers, including Rakesh Kumar Yadav, ADCP-City-2, and Manmohan Singh, ACP Model Town, arrived at the scene to oversee the investigation.
