In a significant embarrassment for the police, a key accused in an interstate ganja trafficking case allegedly escaped from custody in Vijayawada before being produced in court, prompting an intensive manhunt across multiple states.
Details of the Escape
The fugitive, identified as Mohammed Sohail, a native of Kerala's Malappuram district, is believed to be one of the masterminds behind a ganja smuggling network operating between Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. His escape has raised serious questions about security lapses and custodial procedures.
Background of the Case
The case began on June 9 when an EAGLE team intercepted a truck at Nidamanur on the outskirts of Vijayawada and seized 140 kg of ganja concealed inside the vehicle. During questioning, investigators learned that the contraband was being transported to Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. Two truck drivers were arrested and handed over to Patamata police for further investigation.
Based on information provided by the drivers, police tracked down and arrested three alleged key operators of the racket — Mohammed Sohail of Kerala and Arup Singh and Rajesh Kumar Singh of Odisha — in Visakhapatnam. All three were subsequently brought to Vijayawada for interrogation.
The Escape Incident
However, in the early hours of June 11, at around 3.45 a.m., Sohail allegedly managed to escape from police custody. The incident reportedly came to light before the accused could be produced in court, leaving officers scrambling to trace him. Police sources said the matter was initially kept under wraps while special teams were deployed to track down the fugitive. Senior officials are understood to have sought detailed reports on how the accused escaped.
Investigations and Suspicions
Investigators believe Sohail operated from Delhi, where he was involved in the used car business. Police suspect he allegedly used vehicles acquired through the business to transport ganja procured directly from cultivation zones in Odisha and supply it to markets in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Search operations are continuing, while the remaining accused are expected to be produced before the court.
