Garhwa Protest Erupts in Violence: 12 Arrested and Two Dozen Bikes Seized
In a tense turn of events, twelve individuals were arrested in Garhwa on Thursday evening following a violent protest by local residents. The incident, which unfolded under the jurisdiction of the Town police station, escalated from a peaceful demonstration into a chaotic confrontation with law enforcement.
Road Blockade and Compensation Demand Spark Unrest
The protest originated in Mahulia village, where residents established a road blockade to demand compensation for the families of two young men, Nand Lal Ram and Rahul Chaudhury, both aged 26. Tragically, these individuals lost their lives on Wednesday night when a speeding tractor collided with their motorbike. The community's grief quickly transformed into anger as they sought justice and financial support for the bereaved families.
Violence Erupts as Police Attempt to Disperse Crowd
The situation deteriorated when police teams arrived at the scene to dismantle the blockade. According to officials, the mob turned aggressive, pelting stones at the officers and causing damage to a police vehicle. In response, the police personnel were forced to take defensive measures, including a baton-charge and firing rounds into the air to protect themselves and restore order.
Garhwa Superintendent of Police Aman Kumar provided an update on the incident, stating, "Over a dozen protesters have been arrested so far and over two dozen bikes have been seized from the spot. People from both sides are injured. The situation is tense but under control though."
Aftermath and Police Actions
In addition to the twelve arrests, the police seized 24 two-wheelers from the protest site, highlighting the scale of the gathering and the measures taken to quell the disturbance. The authorities have emphasized that the actions were necessary for self-defence and to prevent further escalation of violence.
- The protest was triggered by a demand for compensation following a fatal tractor accident.
- Violence broke out when police intervened to clear the road blockade.
- Police resorted to baton-charge and aerial firing to control the aggressive mob.
- Injuries were reported on both sides, with the situation remaining tense but managed.
This incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in handling public demonstrations, especially when emotions run high due to tragic events. The community's call for compensation reflects broader issues of road safety and victim support in the region.
