Gaya: Two men suspected to be involved in the loot of cash and jewellery worth around Rs 45 lakh from a bullion trader in Gaya were injured in an encounter with police late Monday night. Both sustained bullet injuries to their legs and are undergoing treatment at Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital here under police custody.
Police recovered stolen gold ornaments, cash, firearms and a cellphone from their possession.
Police Action Based on Tip-Off
Gaya SSP Sushil Kumar said on Tuesday, “Acting on a tip-off regarding the gold loot, a police team comprising district police and the special task force (STF) jawans, cornered the suspects near Hathiya dam area under the Amas police station area. However, the suspects tried to escape and started firing on the police team. Police and the STF team too fired in self defence. Two suspects were shot in their legs and were arrested by the police team.”
Recoveries and Identification
He added, “The police team recovered 40 pieces of stolen gold ornaments, Rs 30,000 cash, two country-made loaded pistols, four live cartridges, and a motorcycle used in the crime. The injured suspects were identified as Sujit Chaudhary of village Jhor under Sherghati police station and Shravan Mallah of village Banahi under Amas police station in Gaya district.”
Criminal Background
“Primary investigation revealed that both men have criminal history. While Sujit was made accused in three criminal cases lodged at Sherghati police station, Shravan too was wanted in two criminal cases lodged at Amas police station,” the SSP added.
Details of the Robbery
The robbery took place at Gurua Bazaar on May 27 when bullion trader Prabhakar Baranwal was returning home after closing his shop. Five armed criminals allegedly intercepted him, shot him in the leg and fled with a bag containing gold and silver ornaments worth about Rs 40 lakh and Rs 5 lakh in cash.
