Girl, 14, Set Ablaze by Uncle for Resisting Molestation

Prayagraj: A 14-year-old girl is battling 40 per cent burns after her uncle allegedly set her ablaze for resisting molestation, police said on Sunday.

The accused, identified as Ramesh, 30, and his wife Nandini, 27, have been arrested in connection with the incident. According to police, the girl was set on fire on May 29 when she raised her voice against the abuse.

In her statement recorded at SRN Hospital, where she is currently admitted, the girl alleged that Ramesh had been trying to outrage her modesty and had subjected her to torture. When she resisted and spoke out, he allegedly set her on fire.

Legal Action

Following a complaint lodged by the victim's brother, the Shivkuti police registered an FIR against four individuals. So far, the uncle and his wife have been arrested, while efforts are underway to apprehend the other two suspects.

Police officials confirmed that the girl had been living with her uncle since 2024, after the death of her parents. Her brother resides separately with his wife in Rajapur. The investigation is ongoing to ascertain the full sequence of events.
