Mumbai Tragedy: Police Vehicle on Wrong Side Leads to Fatal Accident, 13-Year-Old Girl Killed
A devastating incident unfolded on Mumbai's Bombay Port Trust (BPT) Road on Tuesday morning, resulting in the tragic death of a 13-year-old girl. The accident occurred when a police vehicle, allegedly traveling on the wrong side of the road, forced a motorcycle to swerve, leading to a fatal collision with a container truck.
Details of the Fatal Collision
According to the Sewree police, the incident took place around 11:10 am. Abdul Bora, a resident of Dongri, was riding his FZ motorcycle with his daughter Aayat as a pillion passenger. They were traveling from Dongri to Wadala via the BPT Road beneath the Eastern Freeway. As they approached the stretch near Bijli Bhavan, a Bolero vehicle, driven by a constable from the State Intelligence Department (SID), was reportedly coming from the wrong direction, heading northwards.
Senior Inspector Rohit Khot of Sewree police station stated that Bora suddenly applied brakes to avoid the oncoming Bolero, causing both father and daughter to lose balance and fall off the motorcycle. In a horrific turn of events, Aayat was flung onto the road and was run over by a container truck that was following from behind.
Immediate Aftermath and Hospitalization
The injured father, Abdul Bora, rushed to his daughter's aid with the help of locals and police personnel. They immediately transported Aayat to KEM Hospital. Tragically, doctors declared her dead upon arrival. Bora sustained injuries in the fall and received first aid at the hospital. Police described him as inconsolable, noting that he only provided his statement after regaining some composure. In his account, Bora mentioned that he lost control of the bike due to the Bolero vehicle driven by the police officer.
Investigation and Identification of Accused
Based on eyewitness testimonies and CCTV footage, authorities quickly identified the Bolero vehicle and traced it to Constable Mukunde from the State Intelligence Department. Police revealed that Mukunde was transporting an officer to a meeting and, running late, took the wrong way to bypass container traffic on BPT Road, which ultimately led to the accident. He has been named as an accused in the case and is currently absconding.
The container truck involved in the incident was detained at the scene. It was transporting imported four-wheelers that had been shipped to Mumbai port and was en route to another state when the tragedy occurred. An FIR has been registered against both the truck driver and Constable Mukunde.
Community Response and Post-Mortem Proceedings
Following the incident, approximately 30 to 35 people, including family members and neighbors of the deceased, gathered at the police station and later at KEM Hospital. Initially, they protested, refusing to allow a post-mortem until proper action was taken. However, after police assured them of a thorough investigation and named the constable and truck driver as accused, they consented to the procedure. A neighbor expressed deep sorrow, calling it an unfortunate incident that has shaken the community.
Abdul Bora, who works part-time as a teacher and runs a small business installing grills in houses, is now grappling with the loss of his young daughter. The case highlights serious concerns about traffic violations and accountability, even among law enforcement personnel, in Mumbai's bustling streets.
