PM Modi Sharpens BJP's Campaign in West Bengal with Focus on Key Issues

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday intensified the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) campaign in poll-bound West Bengal, centering his rhetoric on critical matters such as infiltration, citizenship, and alleged corruption under the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. Addressing a public rally in Katwa within Purba Bardhaman district, PM Modi pledged to accelerate the process of granting citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) for eligible refugee families if the BJP secures power in the state.

Rallies Across Key Districts Highlight BJP's Promises

In total, PM Modi conducted three rallies across West Bengal, targeting constituencies in Katwa, Jangipur, and Murshidabad. During a separate rally in Jangipur, he launched a scathing attack on the TMC, stating, "From Sandeshkhali to RG Kar, this ruthless government stood up to protect rapists. Bengal does not forget this. The era of fear will end." This statement underscored his broader critique of the TMC's governance, which he claimed has fostered an atmosphere of fear over its 15-year rule.

Outreach to Refugee Communities and Citizenship Assurance

PM Modi specifically targeted the Matua and Namasudra communities, which constitute a significant electoral base in several districts of South Bengal. He assured them of constitutional protection, saying, "I want to tell the Matua and Namasudra refugee families that they are under the protection of the country's Constitution. Modi enacted the CAA law so that Matua, Namasudra, and all refugees get citizenship." He further emphasized that a BJP government would expedite the citizenship process for all eligible applicants under the CAA, reinforcing this commitment in his speeches.

Crackdown on Infiltration and Corruption Allegations

Stepping up his assault on alleged illegal immigration, PM Modi warned that 'infiltrators' would have to leave West Bengal if the BJP assumes power. He declared, "The infiltrators should start packing their bags; it is time to leave. Those who have helped the infiltrators will not be spared." Additionally, he intensified allegations of corruption against the TMC, promising strict action and accountability. PM Modi stated that a BJP government would release a "white paper" detailing corruption involving TMC's MLAs, ministers, and syndicates, ensuring legal accounting and transparency.

Welfare Schemes and Women Voter Outreach

In an effort to appeal to women voters, PM Modi announced a monthly financial support scheme, revealing, "BJP has announced Rs 3,000 per month for women." He asserted that the party is committed to strengthening welfare delivery by removing corruption and middlemen from implementation, rather than discontinuing benefits. He accused the TMC of spreading misinformation about BJP schemes and emphasized, "BJP won't stop anything. BJP will only shut down the shop of corruption."

Claims of Growing Public Support and Election Context

PM Modi claimed growing public support for the BJP in West Bengal, citing high voter participation and enthusiasm, particularly among women, as indicators of a strong mandate in the party's favor. He also shared a video clip during the rally, highlighting a large crowd turnout even at the helipad before his program began. These rallies precede the West Bengal Assembly elections, scheduled in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting set for May 4.

Uniform Civil Code and Broader Political Strategy

In a separate rally in Murshidabad, PM Modi addressed national security and legal reforms, stating, "The security of the nation is paramount to us. The BJP is resolved to implement the UCC (Uniform Civil Code) in Bengal and put an end to the politics of appeasement once and for all." This aligns with the BJP's broader agenda to consolidate its position in the state, where the TMC returned to power with a strong majority in the 2021 elections, while the BJP emerged as the principal opposition with 77 seats.

The Prime Minister's campaign efforts reflect a strategic push to address local concerns while leveraging national issues, aiming to sway voters in a highly contested electoral landscape.
