Gold Price Surge Fuels Snatching Crime Wave in Bhubaneswar
Soaring gold prices have not only impacted buyers but also triggered a sudden surge in criminal activities, particularly snatching, posing a significant challenge for the city police in Bhubaneswar. According to police sources, incidents of gold-related snatching have increased by nearly 18% in the past six months, highlighting a worrying trend in the region.
Sharp Rise in Reported Cases
Between September 2025 and the present, at least 95 cases of gold chain snatching have been officially reported, compared to approximately 80 cases in the preceding six-month period. Officials caution that the actual number could be higher, as many victims opt not to file formal complaints to avoid the lengthy and cumbersome procedures involved with police and court systems.
An inspector explained, "Gold has always been a prime target for criminals, but the recent surge in prices has made it even more lucrative. Snatchers are well aware that even a small chain can fetch a substantial amount in the market." The inspector added that thieves are expanding their targets to include residential break-ins to loot gold, indicating a broader criminal strategy.
Resident Anxiety and Personal Accounts
Residents, especially women, have expressed heightened anxiety over their safety. Sakuntala Mohanty, a victim who lost her gold chain while returning home from a morning walk in Sailashree Vihar, recounted, "It happened in mere seconds. Before I could even react, the snatchers sped away on a motorcycle, leaving me shaken."
Sahadev Swain, a jewellery store manager, noted, "Gold may traditionally symbolize prosperity, but currently, it is increasingly becoming a magnet for crime, attracting opportunistic offenders." This sentiment is echoed by community leaders like Rajat Swain, president of a resident welfare association, who warned, "Unless law enforcement intensifies its crackdown, the city could witness a further escalation in such crimes. It is the fundamental duty of the police to ensure our safety and protect our property."
Police Response and Challenges
In response to the rising crime wave, police have stepped up patrols in vulnerable areas and are deploying plainclothes officers to apprehend offenders. However, officers acknowledge the inherent challenges in tackling these crimes, which are often opportunistic and executed within moments, making prevention and capture difficult.
Another officer stated, "We are intensifying surveillance efforts and urging citizens to report incidents promptly. Without proper and timely reporting, it becomes exceedingly difficult to track criminal patterns and nab repeat offenders." Despite the increase in snatching cases, police report successes in busting several criminal gangs and recovering a significant portion of the stolen articles.
Public Safety Advisory
For now, police are strongly advising caution to the public. Citizens have been recommended to avoid wearing heavy gold ornaments in crowded public spaces and to remain vigilant while commuting. These preventive measures aim to reduce the risk of becoming targets, as the allure of high-value gold continues to drive criminal activity in Bhubaneswar.
