Government Blocks Over 200 Illegal Betting Websites in Major Enforcement Action
The Indian government took decisive action on Friday. Authorities blocked access to more than 200 illegal betting and gambling websites. This move falls under the provisions of the Online Gaming Act, which became operational in October 2025.
Latest Crackdown Targets 242 Platforms
Government sources confirmed the specific number to news agency ANI. Officials blocked exactly 242 illegal betting and gambling website links in this latest operation. This brings the total number of such platforms taken down to over 7,800 since enforcement efforts began.
The crackdown has intensified significantly following the passage of the Online Gaming Act. Government representatives emphasized that this action demonstrates their commitment to protecting users. They specifically mentioned safeguarding youth from potential harm.
Focus on Curbing Financial and Social Damage
The government's primary concern involves preventing financial losses and social problems. Illegal online betting and gambling platforms often cause substantial harm to individuals and families. By blocking these websites, authorities aim to reduce such negative impacts across society.
President Droupadi Murmu gave her formal assent to the legislation in August last year. Both Houses of Parliament had previously passed the bill. The law officially came into force after receiving presidential approval.
Law Distinguishes Between Different Types of Gaming
The Online Gaming Act makes important distinctions in its approach. It actively promotes e-sports and social online games that involve skill rather than chance. Simultaneously, it bans harmful money-based gaming activities that rely primarily on luck.
The legislation also prohibits the promotion of such platforms. It restricts financial transactions related to illegal betting and gambling operations. This comprehensive approach targets the ecosystem supporting these activities.
Enforcement Targets Service Providers, Not Players
An important aspect of the law involves its enforcement focus. Individual players participating in money-based online games will not face penalties. Instead, authorities will take action against service providers, advertisers, and promoters.
Those financing illegal betting and gambling platforms will also face consequences. This strategy aims to disrupt the business models behind these operations while avoiding punishment for users who might have participated.
The online gaming rules officially took effect on October 1 last year. Since that date, enforcement agencies have been working systematically to identify and block non-compliant platforms. Friday's action represents the latest phase in this ongoing effort to create a safer online environment for all Indians.
