A dispute over payment for grocery items allegedly escalated into a fatal assault in Haryana's Sonipat district, leaving a shopkeeper dead and triggering a murder investigation against a father-son duo, the police said.
Incident Details
The incident took place in the Rai area on June 16, where Rajesh, a grocery store owner from Jatheri village, was allegedly attacked following an argument over outstanding dues and payment for goods purchased from his shop. According to a complaint filed by Rajesh's wife, Neelam, she was present at the store with her husband around 7:30 pm when Ramsevak and his son arrived to buy household items. After the purchase, an argument reportedly broke out over financial transactions and pending payments.
Violent Altercation
The complaint alleges that the altercation quickly turned violent, with the accused father and son allegedly throwing Rajesh to the ground and assaulting him. Family members have alleged that the victim was kicked in his private parts, resulting in severe injuries. Rajesh reportedly lost consciousness at the spot. He was rushed to a private hospital in Sonipat, where doctors declared him dead.
Community Shock
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents expressing concern over the deadly consequences of what initially appeared to be a routine dispute over money. Based on Neelam's complaint, Rai police registered a case against Ramsevak and his son under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to murder and acts committed with common intention.
Investigation Progress
Police officials said the investigation has been entrusted to sub-inspector Ashok, who is collecting evidence and recording statements related to the case. The body was taken into police custody and sent for post-mortem examination at Khanpur Medical College. Rai SHO Yashvir said the victim's last rites were performed after the post-mortem examination. He added that no arrests had been made so far and the investigation was still in progress.
"We are examining all aspects of the case. Further action will be taken on the basis of the investigation and the post-mortem report," the SHO said. Police officials maintained that the exact circumstances leading to the death would become clearer after forensic and medical findings are analysed.
