A 40-year-old man was apprehended by the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Hyderabad on Tuesday for allegedly transporting hawala cash from Mumbai to Hyderabad. Officials seized Rs 1.22 crore from his possession, according to a statement released on Wednesday.
Joint Check Leads to Arrest
During a joint inspection conducted by the Government Railway Police Secunderabad along with Railway Protection Force (RPF) staff on Tuesday, the individual was taken into custody while traveling on the Devagiri Express. Police officials grew suspicious after noticing the man carrying a bag between Bollaram and Malkajgiri railway stations.
Interrogation Reveals Details
Upon questioning, it was discovered that the man is a resident of Maharashtra's Amaravati district. During interrogation, he disclosed that on May 25, he had received Rs 1,22,70,000 from a person who runs a jewellery store in Mumbai. Acting on the jeweller's instructions, he was transporting the cash to Secunderabad via the Devagiri Express to hand it over to another individual allegedly associated with a jewellery shop in the Monda Market area of Secunderabad.
The cash was linked to hawala transactions connected with the jewellery business. However, the suspect failed to produce any valid supporting documents or provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the possession, ownership, source, or intended use of the money. Consequently, the GRP seized the entire amount of Rs 1.22 crore.
Further investigation is underway to trace the network involved in the hawala operation.
