Gujarat ATS Nabs Two Suspects in Alleged 'Ghazwa-e-Hind' Terror Conspiracy
In a significant counter-terrorism operation, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has apprehended two individuals accused of conspiring to establish "Ghazwa-e-Hind," a term historically associated with extremist ideologies targeting India. The arrests were made public on Tuesday following intensive surveillance of suspected anti-national activities across social media platforms and the broader internet.
Details of the Arrests and Suspect Profiles
The primary suspect, identified as Irfankhan Pathan, aged 22, was taken into custody from Siddhpur in Patan district. His subsequent interrogation provided crucial leads that enabled authorities to locate and detain the second accused, Murshid Shaikh, aged 21, a resident of Mumbai's Saki Naka area. The Maharashtra Police collaborated closely with Gujarat ATS to facilitate Shaikh's arrest, after which he was transported to Gujarat for further questioning.
Alleged Conspiracy and Radical Connections
According to official statements from the ATS, Pathan maintained active communications with individuals and groups espousing radical Islamic ideologies. He is alleged to have been deeply involved in planning activities aimed at destabilizing the Government of India. Forensic analysis of data retrieved from his mobile phone revealed extensive use of encrypted messaging applications like WhatsApp and Instagram to connect with persons linked to international terrorist organizations, including ISIS.
The investigation uncovered that Pathan and his associates were allegedly devising plans to target prominent political leaders, individuals associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and other key figures. Their broader strategy reportedly involved recruiting and mobilizing persons from various states across India, providing them with training in the use of weapons and explosives, and arranging financial resources to execute attacks in multiple regions of the country.
International Dimensions and Evidence Recovery
Authorities further disclosed that Pathan was in contact with entities outside India to procure weapons, indicating an international dimension to the alleged plot. Simultaneously, material recovered from Shaikh's mobile phone included chat logs that corroborated communication with Pathan regarding these purported activities, strengthening the case against both accused.
Legal Proceedings and Charges Filed
An official offense has been registered at the ATS police station under Sections 61 and 148 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertain to criminal conspiracy and waging war against the nation. Following their arrest, both Irfankhan Pathan and Murshid Shaikh have been remanded to 11 days of police custody, allowing investigators to delve deeper into the network and thwart any potential threats.
