Gurgaon Canter Crash Injures Five, Including Four Haryana Government Officials
In a late-night incident in Gurgaon, five individuals, comprising four Haryana government officials and a truck driver, sustained injuries after a canter violently collided with a government SUV. The accident occurred on the Southern Peripheral Road in Sector 77 around 1 AM on Tuesday, during a routine vehicle inspection operation.
Details of the Incident and Injuries
The injured parties were promptly transported to Civil Hospital in Sector 10 for medical attention. All five, including the arrested driver, were later discharged after receiving treatment. The government team, led by Assistant Excise and Taxation Officer (AETO) Mahim Sharma, had traveled from Panchkula to Gurgaon on official duty the previous day. Accompanying Sharma were driver Deshraj, attendant Umesh, and EHC Krishan Kumar.
According to the official complaint filed by AETO Sharma, the team was stationed inside a government Scorpio vehicle and used a torch along with hand gestures to signal the approaching canter to stop. "The truck continued at high speed and crashed into the SUV. The impact caused the govt vehicle to overturn, trapping the occupants inside," the complaint detailed.
Arrest and Legal Action
The driver of the canter, identified as Mahendra, a resident of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested following the incident. He has since been granted bail by the authorities. Police reported that the collision's force was so severe that it caused the cabin portion of the canter to collapse, resulting in injuries to Mahendra as well.
An officer involved in the investigation noted that the canter had an open, uncovered body and was not carrying any goods at the time of the crash. Passers-by played a crucial role in rescuing the injured officials from the overturned government vehicle.
Police Case Registered
In response to the incident, the Khedki Daula police station has registered a case under multiple sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita. The charges include:
- Section 125(a) for acts endangering life
- Section 281 for rash driving
- Section 324(4) for mischief
This legal action underscores the seriousness of the crash, which has raised concerns about road safety during enforcement operations in the area.
