Cyclist's Morning Ride Ends in Tragedy in DLF 2

A 58-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Gurgaon's upscale DLF 2 area, sending shockwaves through the city. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, and despite police locating the registered owner's address in Delhi, both the owner and the driver remain untraced.

Amitabh Jain, a resident of Bougainvilla Marg, was on his routine morning bicycle ride along Akashneem Marg around 7 am when tragedy struck. A speeding white Santro car allegedly hit him from behind. Passersby rushed the critically injured Jain to Max Hospital, where he succumbed to internal injuries.

Police Investigation and Elusive Suspect

Police officials stated that a multi-team investigation was launched immediately after the incident. CCTV cameras in the vicinity captured the white vehicle fleeing the spot moments after the collision. SHO Manoj Kumar confirmed that a team was dispatched to the registered address of the vehicle owner in Delhi's Fatehpur Beri, but the man was not present at his house.

The investigation is now focused on several key aspects. Authorities are working to determine who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash and are examining whether the driver was intoxicated or had dozed off at the wheel. "We are exploring every angle. The vehicle's condition and the driver's conduct at the time of impact will be crucial pieces of evidence," an investigator said.

Technical surveillance teams are analysing mobile phone activity in the area around the time of the incident. Police have also obtained CCTV footage from over a dozen cameras installed along the suspected route, including entry and exit points of DLF 2, to map the car's movement before and after the accident.

Chilling CCTV Footage and Victim's Profile

The available CCTV footage paints a grim picture. It shows the white car appearing behind the cyclist at 6:49 am on a near-empty road. The vehicle hits Jain and drags him along for a few metres before speeding away.

The victim, Amitabh Jain, was a former chemist shop owner from Delhi's Malka Ganj who had shifted to Gurgaon in 2014. He lived with his wife, who is a senior conservator at the Parliament Museum. He is survived by two children, one working in London and the other in Bengaluru. After the autopsy, his body was handed over to the family on Thursday.

Police have registered a case under sections 281 (rash driving), 106 (causing death by negligence), and 324(2) (mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Rising Concerns Over Cyclist Safety in Gurgaon

This fatal incident has once again highlighted the severe safety concerns for cyclists, pedestrians, and two-wheeler riders on Gurgaon's roads. They remain the most vulnerable road users in the city.

The data is alarming. This year alone, around 15 cyclists have died in over 25 accidents in Gurgaon. Last year witnessed 18 cyclist deaths in 27 incidents. Overall, till November this year, 428 people have lost their lives in approximately 1,000 road accidents in the city, compared to 442 fatalities during the same period last year. A total of 478 people were killed in road crashes in Gurgaon in 2024.

The search for the absconding car owner and driver continues as the city grapples with yet another grim reminder of its road safety crisis.
