In a decisive move to curb noise pollution and enhance road safety, the Gurgaon traffic police have issued hefty fines to dozens of bikers using illegally modified exhaust systems. A focused 15-day campaign, which commenced on December 1, resulted in penalties for 33 two-wheeler riders found flouting prescribed sound norms.
The Crackdown on 'Bullet Patakha' Bikes
The police initiative was a direct response to numerous public complaints regarding loud, explosive exhaust sounds, often associated with modified Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles, colloquially termed "Bullet patakha" bikes. A senior police officer stated that these alterations not only breach traffic and motor vehicle regulations but also cause significant public disturbance and pose serious safety hazards on the city's roads.
Officials explained that the modified silencers, especially fitted on Bullet bikes, produce firecracker-like noises that drastically exceed the permissible sound limits under the Motor Vehicles Act. Such modifications are illegal as they change the factory-fitted exhaust systems. The campaign saw a cumulative penalty of Rs 3.3 lakh imposed on the offenders.
Risks and Wider Advisory
Authorities highlighted the broader dangers of such modifications. Experts warn that excessive noise can distract drivers, elevate stress levels, and increase the likelihood of road accidents. The nuisance affects pedestrians, residents, senior citizens, patients, and schoolchildren alike.
During the drive, the traffic police also targeted riders using pressure horns. Furthermore, riders were advised to adhere to several key safety rules:
- Ensure only two persons travel on a motorcycle.
- Always wear a helmet.
- Avoid driving in the wrong direction.
- Refrain from drunk driving.
- Do not use mobile phones while riding.
Objective: Safer Roads for Gurgaon
The Gurgaon traffic police reiterated that their primary goal is to make the city's roads safer and reduce accidents. They have urged citizens to act responsibly by not installing firecracker-type silencers or pressure horns on their vehicles and to follow all traffic rules diligently.
This enforcement drive underscores a continued effort to tackle noise pollution and reckless driving, promoting a more peaceful and secure environment for all commuters and residents in Gurgaon.
