Gurgaon Traffic Police Launch Major Crackdown on Modified Motorcycles and Noise Pollution
In a significant enforcement drive, Gurgaon traffic police have taken strict action against two-wheeler riders using modified or non-functional silencers on Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles. During a special month-long campaign in January, authorities issued 80 challans worth a total of Rs 8 lakh specifically targeting these noise-generating violations.
Targeting Public Nuisance and Road Safety Hazards
The comprehensive drive focused on modified motorcycles and pressure horns that produce loud, sudden sounds, creating public disturbance and posing serious risks to other road users. Police officials emphasized that such excessive noise often distracts commuters and significantly increases the likelihood of accidents on busy Gurgaon roads.
"These modified silencers create excessive noise pollution that can be particularly disturbing for senior citizens and vulnerable populations," stated a traffic police officer. "Riders must act responsibly and avoid causing inconvenience to others. We will continue taking strict action against such violations to maintain public order and road safety."
Continued Enforcement in February with Massive Challan Numbers
The enforcement efforts continued into February with even greater intensity. Between February 2 and February 8 alone, traffic police issued a staggering 12,440 challans across various violations. Of these, 11,045 were issued on the ground, generating fines totaling Rs 1.41 crore.
The major violations recorded during this period included:
- Wrong-side driving: 1,702 cases
- Wrong parking: 1,128 cases
- Riding without helmets (including riders and pillion riders): 1,541 cases
- Seat belt violations: 762 cases
- Drunken driving: 399 cases
- Dangerous U-turns: 340 cases
- Lane change violations: 324 cases
- Triple riding: 145 cases
- Speeding: 57 cases
- Mobile phone use while driving: 62 cases
- Noise pollution: 29 cases
Additionally, automated cameras issued 1,395 challans for violations including:
- No-entry violations: 902 cases
- Lane change violations: 245 cases
- Speeding: 64 cases
- Air pollution: 56 cases
- Multiple helmet and seat belt violations
Enhanced Surveillance and Monitoring Systems
To strengthen monitoring capabilities, police have significantly increased surveillance on key transportation corridors including NH-8, Dwarka Expressway, and Mumbai Expressway. Authorities are utilizing NHAI-installed cameras and drone technology to detect lane-changing and overspeeding violations more effectively.
Traffic police spokesperson Vikas Verma explained the rationale behind these measures: "Enhanced monitoring and strict enforcement are integral components of our comprehensive strategy to improve compliance and reduce accidents. Our goal is to create safer road environments for all commuters through technological advancement and rigorous policing."
Awareness Campaigns Complement Enforcement Efforts
Alongside strict enforcement actions, traffic police have launched the innovative 'Challan Nahi Salam Milega' awareness campaign. In February alone, educational programs were conducted at 18 different locations across Gurgaon, reaching over 1,040 citizens and students.
Participants received detailed information about essential traffic rules and emergency services including Dial 112 and the traffic helpline 1095. The awareness sessions emphasized critical safety practices such as maintaining lane discipline, avoiding wrong-side driving and speeding, proper use of helmets and seat belts, and refraining from mobile phone use or driving under alcohol influence.
"We strongly urge all commuters to follow traffic regulations and drive responsibly to ensure safer roads for everyone," Verma added, highlighting the dual approach of enforcement and education in Gurgaon's road safety strategy.
