A team from Hajo Police Station conducted a late-night raid in Kamrup district’s Hajo town and arrested a man after recovering a large number of LPG cylinders stored illegally inside a shop, officials said on Tuesday.
Raid Details
The operation was carried out on Monday night based on specific intelligence inputs. During the raid, police apprehended Abdul Khalek (51), a resident of Natun Chorabori under Hajo Police Station.
“During the raid, police recovered and seized a total of 74 LPG cylinders allegedly kept without valid authorisation. The seized items included 34 empty Indane domestic LPG cylinders, 17 empty Bharat Gas domestic LPG cylinders, 15 empty HP Gas domestic LPG cylinders, and eight filled HP Gas cylinders. Police also recovered 15 LPG consumer cards belonging to different individuals,” said Rupam Hazarika, officer-in-charge of Hajo Police Station.
Investigation and Safety Concerns
Hazarika said the cylinders were found inside the accused’s shop premises. During preliminary questioning, Khalek failed to produce valid documents or provide a satisfactory explanation for possessing such a large quantity of LPG cylinders and consumer cards.
“We suspect the cylinders may have been stolen and stored illegally in unsafe conditions, posing a serious risk to public safety,” Hazarika added. A case has been registered against the accused, and police are investigating the possible involvement of other accomplices.
“A case was filed under Sections 287, 288, 303(2), and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act, and the accused was forwarded to the local court,” the OC said.
Police further stated that strict action will continue against illegal activities that endanger public safety and violate LPG storage and distribution regulations.
