Hampi Road Accident: Israeli Tourist's Compensation Payout Sparks Social Media Backlash

A road accident that occurred on February 16 in Sanapur near Hampi, Karnataka, has come to light more than a month later after a video of a compensation payout went viral on social media. The incident, which took place on the same day a court delivered its verdict in the Hampi gang rape and murder case involving an Israeli survivor, has stirred controversy and raised questions about transparency and local image concerns.

Details of the Accident and Injuries

Shantakumar, a 28-year-old masonry supervisor, was allegedly hit by an Israeli tourist while speeding on a two-wheeler, according to his brother N Vijay. The accident resulted in serious leg injuries for Shantakumar, who lost a significant amount of blood and had to be rushed to a private hospital in Ballari for urgent medical attention.

Doctors diagnosed a fracture and recommended plastic surgery, with estimated costs reaching approximately Rs 11 lakh. Vijay explained that the family initially hesitated to publicize the incident due to its sensitive timing, fearing it could negatively impact Hampi's reputation as an international tourist destination.

Compensation Payout and Police Involvement

The situation became complicated when the Ballari hospital insisted on a police complaint before proceeding with the surgery. Upon returning to Sanapur on February 18, individuals claiming to represent the Israeli tourist offered Rs 6 lakh as compensation, which the family accepted due to the medical emergency.

However, the issue gained widespread attention only after a video of the payout surfaced online, leading to a social media backlash. Critics accused the family of defaming Hampi and India by accepting cash from a foreigner to cover up the incident.

When the family approached the Gangavathi Rural police to file a complaint, they faced resistance. Vijay reported that police questioned why they were pursuing a case after accepting compensation. After hours of discussion, a case was finally registered on February 18.

Current Status and Legal Considerations

Shantakumar remains hospitalized and is expected to take at least two more months to recover and walk again. The family is now considering legal action against those they believe are misrepresenting facts on social media, aiming to set the record straight and address the misinformation circulating online.

Koppal SP Ram L Arasiddi has commented on the incident, describing it as a "minor accident" while confirming that a case was registered. This statement has added to the ongoing debate about the severity of the incident and the handling of such cases involving foreign tourists.

The viral video has highlighted broader issues, including:

  • The pressure on local families to protect tourist destinations' images.
  • Challenges in navigating police procedures during medical emergencies.
  • The impact of social media on public perception and legal processes.

As the story continues to unfold, it underscores the delicate balance between tourism promotion and accountability in accident cases, particularly in culturally significant areas like Hampi.
