Harish Rana's 12-Year Medical Vigil Concludes with Solemn Cremation in Delhi
The 12-year vigil for Harish Rana, a 31-year-old engineering student from Ghaziabad who never regained consciousness after a tragic accident, reached its poignant conclusion on Wednesday. His body, draped in white, arrived at Delhi's Green Park crematorium from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where he had been under palliative care.
A Family's Stoic Farewell Amidst Profound Grief
No tears were visibly shed as silence etched into grief marked the sombre afternoon. Harish's younger brother, Ashish Rana, lit the funeral pyre to the traditional chants of "Ram naam satya hai" from the assembly of mourners. The young man's composure briefly faltered during the last rites, prompting his sister to rush to his side and assist him in completing the rituals.
Their father, Ashok Rana, walked past the gathered crowd with hands folded and eyes fixed on the pyre. The mother stood stoically to the side, embodying a quiet strength. "Let no one weep. He is in a happy place now. I am praying my son may depart in peace. Wherever he is born next, may he receive God's blessings," Ashok Rana told PTI, reflecting the family's spiritual acceptance.
The Tragic Accident and Landmark Legal Journey
Harish Rana's ordeal began in 2013 when, as a 19-year-old student at Punjab University, he suffered a severe brain injury after falling from the fourth floor of a building. He remained in a persistent vegetative state, never regaining consciousness. This led to a landmark legal battle that culminated in a Supreme Court order granting his plea for passive euthanasia.
Earlier this month, based on this historic judgment, Harish was moved to the palliative care unit at AIIMS. Under strict medical supervision, clinically assisted nutrition and hydration were withdrawn, supplemented with active pain management to ensure comfort in his final days. He passed away at 4:10 PM on Tuesday, bringing an end to his prolonged medical struggle.
Community Support and a Legacy of Donation
The cremation was attended by several dignitaries and community members, including Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajai Rai and representatives from the Brahma Kumaris, a women-led spiritual organization with which the Rana family is associated. As the flames dimmed and mourners began to disperse, Ashish remained rooted in place until his young niece ran up and clung to her "Mamu" (maternal uncle).
In a gesture of profound generosity amidst their loss, the family donated Harish's corneas and heart valves, ensuring his legacy continues through potential life-saving and vision-restoring transplants. This act of donation underscores the family's commitment to helping others even in their moment of personal tragedy.
