Hassan Police Declares 'War Against Drugs' to Combat Narcotics Menace
In a decisive move to tackle the escalating drug problem, the Hassan district police have officially launched a comprehensive 'War Against Drugs' campaign. This initiative aims to curb the growing consumption of narcotics, with particular focus on protecting the youth from this dangerous trend.
New Leadership Takes Firm Stand
The campaign is being spearheaded by the newly appointed Superintendent of Police, Shubhanwita, who has taken a firm and uncompromising stance against the circulation of drugs, ganja, and other narcotic substances throughout the district. "We are targeting the suppliers because the peddlers who supply drugs were the main culprits," she emphasized, highlighting the strategic approach of the operation.
According to police officials, these peddlers primarily target students and young people, thereby destroying their futures and creating negative ripple effects throughout society. "The peddlers mostly target students and destroy the youths' future, which also affects society," Shubhanwita stated, underscoring the social impact of drug abuse.
Intensified Operations Yield Early Results
Police teams have already begun intensified operations across Hassan district, resulting in significant early successes. In recent actions:
- Two ganja peddlers were arrested—one in Hassan city proper
- Another was apprehended in Arehalli, identified as a migrant labourer
These arrests demonstrate the campaign's immediate operational effectiveness and signal the police department's commitment to disrupting drug supply chains.
Balanced Approach: Enforcement and Rehabilitation
While focusing on enforcement against suppliers, the police are adopting a balanced approach that also addresses demand reduction. "War on drugs will continue," Shubhanwita affirmed, while simultaneously announcing support measures for users struggling with addiction.
"I have already visited two rehabilitation centres. Consumers addicted to drugs require support and cooperation to overcome the menace," she explained. "As part of community policing, we are referring them to rehabilitation centres."
This dual strategy recognizes that sustainable solutions require both disrupting supply networks and providing pathways to recovery for those already affected.
Addressing Systemic Challenges
The initiative has revealed certain systemic challenges within the district's rehabilitation infrastructure. Although Hassan has several rehabilitation facilities, many reportedly lack proper licences and regulatory compliance.
The police have committed to addressing this issue by initiating measures to streamline licensing processes and ensure all facilities meet required standards. "We need stringent efforts to curb illegal activities and protect our youth," the Superintendent of Police emphasized, indicating a comprehensive approach to the problem.
Community Response and Regional Concerns
The 'War Against Drugs' campaign has drawn appreciation from Hassan residents who have long been concerned about the drug problem. Sadananda, a coffee estate owner in Sakleshpura, confirmed that drug use is rampant in the district, particularly in the Malnad region.
"Drug use is rampant in the district, particularly in Malnad region, involving migrant labourers, tourists, and some locals," he reported, highlighting the diverse demographics affected by the issue.
Another resident, Samarth, raised specific concerns about tourist areas, noting that "tourists staying in resorts and homestays reportedly consume banned substances without the knowledge of the management." He urged that "the police must take strict measures in this regard," reflecting community expectations for decisive action.
The Hassan police's comprehensive campaign represents a significant step toward creating a safer environment for the district's youth while addressing both the supply and demand sides of the narcotics problem through coordinated enforcement and rehabilitation efforts.
