Himachal Pradesh Police Escalate War on Drugs with Major Crackdown

The Himachal Pradesh Police have significantly ramped up their efforts to combat organised drug networks, resulting in the detention of 96 traffickers as part of the ongoing 'Anti-Chitta' campaign. This statewide initiative, which aims to eradicate the scourge of 'chitta' (heroin) from the region, was officially launched on November 15, 2025, by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

Coordinated Operations Under Stringent Legislation

Acting under the rigorous provisions of the PIT-NDPS Act, law enforcement agencies executed a series of coordinated, intelligence-driven operations specifically targeting habitual and organised drug traffickers. In a decisive move, preventive detention orders were issued against eight notorious offenders to curb their illicit activities.

During these operations, authorities made multiple arrests across various districts. Specifically, five traffickers were apprehended in Shimla district, while one each was taken into custody from Dehra, Nurpur, and Una, as confirmed by police officials on a recent Saturday.

Steady Progress and Asset Investigation

A police spokesperson provided a detailed breakdown of the detentions, noting that 65 traffickers were detained by December 2025. The crackdown continued into 2026, with action taken against an additional 31 individuals, bringing the total number of detainees to 96.

In a strategic effort to dismantle the financial underpinnings of the drug trade, authorities are actively investigating the movable and immovable assets of those detained. Properties identified as being acquired through illegal drug proceeds will be seized under the law, effectively targeting the economic networks that support this illicit commerce.

Zero-Tolerance Policy and Public Cooperation

The police have reiterated the state's unwavering zero-tolerance policy against narcotics, affirming that strict and continuous action will be maintained to combat this menace. To bolster these efforts, citizens, particularly the youth, are strongly urged to report any information related to drug activities.

Confidentiality is assured for those who come forward, with reports to be made by dialling the emergency number 112 or by contacting the nearest police station. This collaborative approach is seen as vital in the broader mission to create a drug-free Himachal Pradesh.
