India to Host Asia Cup U-18 Men's Basketball Tournament After 20 Years
India Hosts Asia Cup U-18 Basketball After 20 Years

For the first time since 2004, India will host the Asia Cup U-18 men's basketball tournament, scheduled to take place from August 13 to 23 at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Ahmedabad. This 11-day event marks the first international basketball championship ever held in Gujarat's capital city.

Shift from Qatar Due to West Asia Conflict

The 16-team continental event was originally allotted to Qatar but was shifted to India because of the ongoing West Asia conflict. Shaktisinh Gohil, president of the Gujarat Basketball Association, explained that the World Basketball Federation (FIBA) requested India to host the Asia Cup due to the situation. With Ahmedabad set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and having a confirmed bid for the 2036 Olympics, the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) allocated the tournament to Gujarat.

World Cup Qualifiers Precede Asia Cup

Just a month before the Asia Cup, Ahmedabad will also host the World Cup qualifiers for the Indian men's basketball team in July. This double hosting opportunity highlights the growing prominence of basketball in the region.

Historical Context of India Hosting Asian Championships

India last hosted an Asian basketball championship in 2022, when the women's event was held in Bengaluru. While women's international competitions have been more frequent in India, men's Asia Cup events in any age category have been rare for the BFI. The U-18 men's Asia Cup was previously hosted by India in 1998 in Kolkata and in 2004 in Bengaluru. Additionally, the U-16 Asian Championship took place in Pune in 2009. After a long gap of 17 years, FIBA has once again entrusted India with a continental men's event.

The upcoming tournament not only showcases India's capability to host major sporting events but also provides a significant opportunity for the development of basketball in the country.
