A young commuter's daily journey turned tragic early Monday morning when a hit-and-run accident on SG Highway claimed his life. The victim, 21-year-old Kathan Kharchar, was riding his motorcycle from Gandhinagar to his workplace in Ahmedabad when an unidentified vehicle struck him near Nirma University.
Sequence of a Fatal Morning Commute
The incident occurred around 6:30 am on Monday on the Chharodi stretch opposite Nirma University. According to police, Kathan was following his usual routine, heading to his job at a private company near YMCA. A speeding vehicle approached from behind and crashed into his motorcycle with tremendous force.
The impact was severe enough to fling Kathan onto the road, causing grievous injuries. He died on the spot before any medical assistance could arrive. Showing no remorse or responsibility, the driver of the offending vehicle immediately sped away from the scene, leaving the young man fatally wounded.
Police Investigation and Family's Anguish
Alerted by other commuters, officials from the SG-1 traffic police station rushed to the location. Family members of Kathan, who lived with relatives in Gandhinagar, also arrived and were devastated to find him lying lifeless on the highway.
Police Inspector R V Vichi stated that a hit-and-run case has been registered. The accused driver has been charged under sections for causing death by negligence and rash driving in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
"The driver escaped after knocking him down. We are scanning CCTV footage across SG Highway to trace the vehicle and determine the sequence of events," Inspector Vichi said.
Search for the Fleeing Vehicle Intensifies
As part of the investigation, authorities have launched a detailed effort to identify the vehicle involved. Key steps include:
- Collecting and examining footage from CCTV cameras installed near Nirma University.
- Reviewing recordings from surrounding service roads and major junctions along the highway.
- Searching for eyewitnesses who might have noted the vehicle's make, model, or registration number.
Despite these efforts, as of late Monday evening, the accused driver remained unidentified. The police investigation is ongoing, with hopes that digital evidence will lead to a breakthrough in this tragic case. Kathan's death highlights the persistent dangers on busy highways and the devastating consequences of reckless driving.
