Hoax Bomb Threats Trigger Widespread Panic Across Bhopal and Indore
Panic gripped the cities of Bhopal and Indore on Wednesday as multiple government and educational institutions received alarming bomb threat emails. The threats, which were later confirmed to be hoaxes, led to massive security mobilizations and evacuations across both cities.
Multiple Institutions Targeted in Coordinated Email Campaign
In Bhopal, seven different locations received threatening emails claiming that 21 poisonous gas bombs had been planted across various campuses. The targeted institutions included the district court, Weights and Measures Department, Regional Passport Office in MP Nagar, JK Hospital and Medical College in Kolar, IISER Bhopal in Khajuri, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hindi University in Sukhi Sewania, and People's University.
Following the alerts, police forces, the Bomb Disposal and Detection Squad (BDDS), dog squads, and other security agencies rushed to all locations and conducted intensive search operations. After thorough checks lasting several hours, authorities confirmed that all threats were hoaxes, bringing significant relief to local administrations.
Security Agencies Conduct Thorough Searches and Evacuations
ACP Alok Shrivastava confirmed that police and bomb squads conducted detailed searches at JK Medical College and Hospital, finding no explosive materials. Similar operations were carried out at other targeted locations with identical results.
Khajuri SHO Neeraj Verma revealed that the IISER campus, which houses approximately 3,500 students and staff members, was evacuated under the pretext of a mock drill. A comprehensive search operation lasting over two hours was conducted, but nothing suspicious was discovered. The Anti-Terrorist Squad has now joined the investigation to trace the source of these threats.
MP Nagar SHO Jai Hind Sharma confirmed that similar thorough searches were conducted at the Regional Passport Office and the Weights and Measures Department. Sukhi Sewania SHO Rambabu Choudhary added that the Hindi University campus was also meticulously checked with no suspicious findings.
Disturbing Content and Political References in Threat Emails
The threatening emails reportedly contained names of other Indian states and included political and ideological remarks, making serious allegations against governments, media organizations, and various trusts. The sender explicitly indicated abandoning democratic processes and adopting violent methods, which prompted heightened alert levels among security agencies across Madhya Pradesh.
Police officials noted that similar hoax emails have been sent to multiple institutions in Bhopal over the past month. The series of threats began on February 19 when People's University in Nishatpura received the first hoax bomb threat email. On March 2, additional threats targeted People's University, AIIMS Bhopal in Bag Sewania, GPO in Royal Market, and the Regional Passport Office in MP Nagar. Just two days before the latest incidents, the Weights and Measures Department in MP Nagar received another threat that also proved to be false.
Indore Also Targeted in Coordinated Threat Campaign
In a parallel development, Indore's divisional commissioner's office and labour commissioner's office received similar threatening emails in the morning, discovered around 12 PM on official email IDs. The emails threatened explosions at these government facilities.
Alerted by 2:10 PM, police forces, bomb disposal squads, and dog squads evacuated hundreds of employees and thoroughly scanned the premises. Deputy commissioner Sapna Lovanshi confirmed that no explosives were found during these operations.
The email received in Indore reportedly contained rambling references to Tamil Nadu politics, specifically targeting the DMK government and Udhayanidhi Stalin. The message bizarrely called staff members "Pakistan spies" and made allegations about foreign-funded trusts pushing specific agendas, along with derogatory remarks about South Indian NGOs.
Ongoing Investigations and Cyber Tracing Efforts
Security agencies are currently working to trace the sender of these threatening emails. The Cyber Cell has initiated tracing operations to identify the IP addresses and digital footprints associated with these communications. Formal complaints have been filed in both cities, and investigations are proceeding with high priority.
Authorities have emphasized that while all threats have so far proven to be hoaxes, they are treating each incident with utmost seriousness given the disturbing content and coordinated nature of these communications. Security has been heightened at sensitive locations across both cities as investigations continue.
