JNU student Hrishikesh Talukdar, an activist of the All India Students Association (AISA), was hospitalised on Wednesday after his health deteriorated during an ongoing hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The protest, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, has entered its 19th day, though the fast began eight days later.
Protester's Condition Worsens
Talukdar, who had been on hunger strike for 11 days, was admitted to a hospital after showing signs of severe dehydration and weakness. According to sources, his condition is stable but he remains under observation. The protest, which began on June 20, has seen participation from students and activists across the country.
Demands and Background
The protesters are demanding Pradhan's resignation over his alleged mishandling of the National Education Policy and other issues. The sit-in at Jantar Mantar has drawn attention to their cause, with several opposition leaders expressing solidarity. The hunger strike, however, has taken a toll on participants, with Talukdar being the first to require hospitalisation.
Impact and Reactions
Speaking to reporters, AISA spokesperson said, 'We are deeply concerned about Hrishikesh's health. The government must listen to our demands before any further harm occurs.' The protest continues, with organisers calling for peaceful demonstrations. The incident has sparked debate on the effectiveness of hunger strikes as a form of protest.
