Hyderabad: Father kills children after divorce, attempts suicide

In a heart-wrenching incident stemming from a broken marriage, a man in Telangana's Narayanpet district allegedly murdered his two young children before attempting to take his own life. The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the local community.

A Decade-Long Marriage Ends in Tragedy

The accused has been identified as 33-year-old Chakali Shiva Ramulu, a labourer and part-time driver from Teelair village in Marikal mandal. According to the Marikal police, Ramulu's marital life with his wife, Sujatha, had been strained for years. The couple had been married for about a decade.

The trouble began approximately six years ago when, following a domestic dispute during which Ramulu allegedly assaulted Sujatha, she left the matrimonial home. She moved back to her parents' house and continued to live there separately. However, the couple's two children—daughter Ritika (8) and son Chaitanya (6)—remained with their father.

Despite Ramulu's repeated attempts to reconcile, Sujatha refused to return. She eventually filed for divorce. The legal process concluded on March 25, 2025, when a local court granted the divorce. Police officials stated that even after the legal separation, Ramulu continued to approach his estranged wife, which left him deeply disturbed.

The Horrific Sequence of Events

The police report outlines a grim sequence of events that unfolded on Monday. Marikal Inspector Rajender Reddy detailed that, in a state of extreme distress, Ramulu strangled his two minor children inside their home.

After committing the act, he disposed of their bodies by dumping them in the village lake. He then attempted to end his own life through two desperate methods: first by coming into contact with live electric wires, and later by consuming pesticide.

His actions did not go completely unnoticed. Some villagers spotted Ramulu in his compromised state and immediately rushed him to the Mahububnagar government hospital. His condition is currently reported to be critical as he undergoes treatment.

Police Investigation and Community Shock

The Marikal police have registered a case and launched a full-scale investigation into the double murder and attempted suicide. The bodies of the children were recovered from the lake, confirming the horrifying crime.

This incident highlights the devastating psychological impact prolonged marital discord and legal battles can have, culminating in an unthinkable act of violence. The village of Teelair is reeling from the shock, struggling to comprehend the loss of two innocent young lives.

The case serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for mental health support and intervention mechanisms for individuals undergoing severe emotional crises, especially in the context of family breakdowns.
