A tragic incident occurred in Hyderabad on Wednesday when a five-year-old girl lost her life after becoming trapped in the collapsible door of an elevator at a women's hostel in Gachibowli. The police have registered a case of negligence against the building owner and the hostel operator.
Incident Details
At around noon, the Gachibowli police received a Dial 100 call reporting the death of a girl in a lift accident at a hostel in the Gowlidoddi area. Officers rushed to the scene and sent the body for post-mortem examination. The victim was identified as Bistu Ghosh, a native of Jharkhand, who lived with her grandparents at the Mahi Women PG hostel in Gowlidoddi. Her grandparents worked as cooks at the hostel.
While her grandparents were busy in the kitchen, Bistu entered the lift on the ground floor and traveled to the fifth floor. According to Gachibowli Inspector K Balaraju, the accident occurred as she was returning to the ground floor. The girl became stuck between the two collapsible doors of the lift, possibly while attempting to open or close them. The lift came to a halt between the third and second floors, and Bistu sustained a severe head injury, dying instantly.
CCTV Footage and Investigation
CCTV footage captured the girl entering the lift but did not show her exiting on the fifth floor. After seven minutes, a woman on the ground floor alerted staff that the lift was not functioning, leading to the discovery of the accident. The inspector noted that the lift had not been properly maintained.
Legal Action
Based on a complaint from the girl's family, the police registered a case under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (causing death due to negligence) against the building owner, Deepansh Goel, and the hostel operator, Mallikarjun Reddy. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
This incident highlights the critical importance of regular maintenance and safety checks of elevators, especially in residential and commercial buildings. Authorities are urged to enforce strict safety protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.
